Film Review Fridays--Sleeping Dogs Lie (2006)

Independent film Sleeping Dogs Lie (2006) is today’s review pick, a comedy with a strange twist on the importance of honesty in romantic relationships. Directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, Sleeping Dogs Lie interestingly is not the expected romantic comedy, if it was, I more than likely, would not have watched it. I’m not a huge fan of romantic comedies.
During college, Amy, on crazed impulse, explores what most of us consider taboo, bestiality. Over the years, she has thought about it from time to time, but in her eyes, it was just some stupid thing she did. Amy is engaged to John; they have the perfect, happy relationship. One night he begins talking about how their marriage should be based on total truthfulness. He wants them to confess their deepest, darkest secrets. He willing exposes his secrets, one of which is the grossest thing I’ve ever heard. Amy reluctantly refuses to tell the truth; instead she makes up a story about having sex with her college roommate. Eventually, her most humiliating secret comes out; her world is turned upside down. From that point, a series of events takes place, so that means you have to make time to watch this quirky, abnormal romantic comedy.
You must have questions…For instance,
“Bestiality, what??”
“What the %!#$ did Amy do?”
“What did John do that was so gross?”
“What happened after her secret was revealed?”
GRADE: B- (it was pleasantly and surprisingly entertaining)
