Tell Me Something Good--Campaign to Educate AIDS Orphans
Welcome to another installment of “Tell Me Something Good Thursday!!”
Today I wanted to share with you, information about emPOWER, which is a school based initiative that is designed to help all children, including orphaned and vulnerable children, receive a quality education in Africa. I think this is a great inititaitive; education can save lives in my opinion.
emPOWER stands for Providing Orphans & Vulnerable Children With Educational Resources; it’s a grassroot program that supports primary education for children in the Kabarole District of Uganda. The program came about as Andria Sherrow, the executive director of EDUCATE Foundation, walked her six year old daughter to Kyanyawara primary school. Along the way, she would often see a young boy, wearing a torn shirt and shorts and no shoes; Andria gradually learned his story.
His name was Muhebwa Richard. Both of his parents died and he was living alone, working to raise crops on his small plot of land to survive. Muhebwa wanted desperately to return to school, but could not afford the required supplies. Deciding something needed to be done, Andria helped develop meetings with village leaders, teachers, parents and the school PTA; emPOWER was born. For the full story, click here.
