Musical Mondays--Eric Roberson, King of Indie
photo courtesy of soultracks.comEric Roberson, some would say that he is the face of the independent music movement. Growing up in Rahway, New Jersey, Roberson began singing at an early age, and started performing as a teen; his father was a great influence, he played guitar and sang.
Roberson attended Howard University on a Musical Theatre scholarship, where he performed regularly on campus and in musicals and plays, cultivating a following. He also managed to score a recording contract with Warner Brothers and recorded the hit “The Moon” in 1994. After graduating, Roberson had built his reputation as a singer, songwriter, and producer, working with various artists over the past decades, including Jill Scott, Will Downing, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Dwele, and many more.
Deciding that he wanted more creative freedom, Roberson shunned major labels and launched his own independent solo career in 2001, releasing his first album, The Esoteric Movement; more albums followed, The Vault 1.0 (2003), The Vault 1.5 (2004), The Appetizer (2005), Erro Live Vol. DC (2006), …Left (2007) and Music Fan First (coming this year). Out of the mentioned releases, four are critically acclaimed, principally selling his albums through concerts, small retail outlets, and CD Baby, resulting in over 100,000 sold copies.
Eric Roberson is definitely an independent artist to watch. His “outside of the norm” success has created a blueprint for up and coming artists. I love his music!! It’s very soulful, as if he’s letting you read his diary or thoughts. It’s original and creative, far from the crap that’s on the radio these days. For all of you who have read my other “Musical Monday” posts, you know that I love Indie music; it’s artists like Eric that make this genre of music worth listening to. Enjoy!
Check out the playlist of Eric Roberson’s music. For some reason, imeem is not allowing me to created individual playlist, but I’ve found an “around about way.” This playlist has several songs, more songs than I would ever put on a playlist for my blog, but at least you have a nice selection to choose from. If any of you out there know what the problem could be or have any suggestions as to how I could fix the problem, let me know. It will be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, enjoy the tunes.

Another wonderful find! You should be a promoter for these people you come up with - one is better than the next - I'm in awe. Believe it or not, I actually put up a Miriam Makeba video today - I've loved her since the 70's!
